Help with this book title? I think it's by Virginia Woolf.?

The book is about a young woman who wins a contest to go to [I think] New York to be a writer. A lot of young women go there to try it out. In the end the main character commits suicide. I want to say it's by Virgina Woolf, but I can't remember. I know it's an older book, though.
