My car is sputtering and the motor is shaking?

02 VW Pat 1.8T The car is sputtering real bad and it has no power. Spark Plugs and Fuel Filter have been replaced recently. No power at all when you hit the gas and it seem's worse when it is put into gear. Take Offs are jumpy and car often dies when you come to a stop. Due to my geographical local my mechanic options are limited. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
