Can you leave icing out unrefrigerated for longer then a week and still use it?

So I'm baking cupcakes for my friends birthday and I go to get the cake mix and icing from my pantry and I noticed it's been open. Is it still okay to use it on the cupcakess? It smells fine and it doesn't expire untill September 2011.
